University of Bath students Hadia Hosny El Said and Michael Jamieson will both be in action on Saturday (28 July), the first full day of sport at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Egyptian badminton player Hadia, who is studying for an MSc in Medical Biosciences at the University, has been drawn in group I of the women’s singles competition at the Games.
She opens her account against France’s number 16 seed Hongyan Pi – a quarter finalist in Beijing four years ago – in the evening session of badminton on Saturday. On Sunday she takes on Ireland’s Chloe Magee. Both matches get underway at 19.10.
Hadia goes into the competition ranked 113 in the world, with Pi ranked at 25 and Magee at 44. Only the top player of the three in the round-robin contest progresses to the knockout rounds.
Sports Performance student Michael Jamieson, who swims at British Swimming’s Bath Intensive Training Centre, makes his Olympic debut in the heats of the 100m breaststroke, which get underway at 11.53 on Saturday. The semi-finals follow at 20.30 with the final on Sunday at 20.08.
University of Bath graduates Heather Stanning and Natalia Sheppard are also due in action on Saturday. Rower Heather partners Helen Glover, who also used to train in Bath, in the opening round of the women’s pair at Eton Dorney at 09.30.
Natalia represents Great Britain in the individual foil fencing, which gets underway at 10.30.
