Gregg wins European Cup silver
Team Bath judo player Gregg Varey is celebrating winning silver at the European Cup in Finland at the weekend.
The 24-year-old scored preliminary round wins over Bas Koffijberg of the Netherlands, Alexander Lundqvist of Sweden and Finland’s Eetu Laaksonen in the under-60kg class in Tampere.
That earned him a place in the semi-final against another Dutch player, Wessel van de Ploeg.
Varey, a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate, won that one with an Ippon score to book a place in the final against Elnur Aliev, but it was the Estonian that took gold.
It was Varey’s first competition back fighting at under-60kg after more than a year competing at under-66kg.
Meanwhile Andy Burns came fifth in the uder-90kg class. He won his pool to progress to the semi-finals, but lost his semi against Poland’s Jakub Zarzeczny.
That gave him a shot at the bronze medal, but he was beaten by Switzerland’s Domenic Wenzinger. Burns is a University of Bath Coach Education & Sports Development graduate.
