Match Report: West Womens League Premier Division

Fixture: Team Bath Buccaneers v Exe

Date: Saturday 24 November 2012

Score:  TBB 2-1 Exe

Venue: University of Bath, Sports Training Village

On a very wet and windy Saturday afternoon, amongst the hysteria of the filming of BBC Superstars, it was time for fourth placed Bath Buccs Ladies 1sts to face top of the league side Exe.

Buccs started hard with some good early breaks, and it wasn’t long before they got their just reward.

After a series of touches in the D, Elianne Vos got the final touch to slip the ball past the Exe keeper.

Both sides attacked and defended well, with chances occurring at both ends of the pitch. Rachel Clarke made some crucial tackles and keeper Kelly Bowden made some vital saves to ensure Buccs were still 1-0 up at half time.

Following an inspirational team talk from coach Jo Thomas, Buccs started the second half confident and determined.

However following a good attacking break from Exe, a stick tackle in the D gave Exe a short corner and an opportunity to level the score.

Despite a quick break from the Buccs defence, number one runner Helen Earle was unfortunate that the ball deflected from the strikers stick, onto hers and into the top corner of the Buccs goal.

At 1-1, Buccs continued to create chances. Long balls from Em White and Rosie Bennett, ensured the Exe defence were kept on their toes. A short corner opportunity came from a quick break by Helen Earle and Sarah Whitehead, which resulted in a Buccs short corner, which was scored…but later controversially disallowed.

However Buccs did not give up and great skill from Jess Rickman who played a ball through into the circle to find Irena

Molloy who skilfully deflected it past the Exe GK to gave Buccs the win they deserved.

It was a fantastic spectacle of hockey by both teams and three valuable points for Buccs.

It was Superstar Saturday all round!!
