05 January 2013

Match Report: West Womens League Premier Division

Fixture: Plymouth Marjons v Team Bath Buccaneers

Date and time: Saturday  5 January 2013

Score:  PM 2-3 TBB

Venue: UCP Marjon

A combination of injury, illness and non-availability resulted in Buccs travelling to Plymouth with a depleted squad of 12 players. Both sides showed evidence of post-Christmas “rust” but Buccs played the better hockey.

Against the run of play Buccs went 1-0 down following a soft goal and then again were unlucky to concede a further goal after a speculative strike into the ‘D’ by a Plymouth player connected with a Buccs stick giving GK Kelly Bowden no chance to save.

2-0 down a half time Buccs ‘dug deep’ and continued to play good hockey but unlike the first half they managed to dominate the opposition and turn this to their advantage.

Helen Earle brought the score back to 2-1 with a reverse sweep shot.

Buccs continued to apply pressure although Plymouth still looked dangerous when counter-attacking. A series of short corners yielded little with the Plymouth keeper saving well on a number of occasions.

Buccs were now completely on top and Steph Baker found herself on the top of the ‘D’ and a straight strike beat the keeper. 2-2 and 10 minutes to go!

Buccs did not give up and played good structured hockey and were rewarded with further short corners. Wendy Britten managed to pounce on a loose ball and with a reverse sweep scored the winner in the last minute.

This could prove to be a really valuable win for Buccs particularly taking account of other results today.

Buccs are sitting 3rd in the table with 23 points.

Strong team spirit was much in evidence – a good start to the new year!
