England netballers prepare to take on world champs in Bath

16 January 2013

There were plenty of familiar faces in evidence at the University of Bath Sports Training Village today (Wednesday) as England’s netballers prepared to take on world champions Australia.

England have been training at the University since Sunday and take on Australia at the Sports Training Village this coming Sunday (20 January) in the first of a three match series, with games following at the Wembley Arena (23 January) and the NIA in Birmingham (26 January).

The series opener in Bath is already a sell out with tickets snapped up within days of going on sale.

Today’s training and media sessions featured an array of Team Bath players who will get their 2013 Superleague campaign underway soon after the international series. For more pictures from the session, please see the Team Bath Facebook site.

England are captained by Team Bath’s Pamela Cookey, with Team Bath team-mates Kadeen Corbin, Stacey Francis and Serena Guthrie also in the England squad.

University of Bath graduates and former Team Bath players Sara Bayman (Sport and Exercise Science) Sasha Corbin (Sports Performance) and Rachel Dunn (Biology) also feature, as well as former Team Bath players Eboni Beckford-Chambers and Lindsay Keable.

Cookey said: “Bath has really embraced netball and it’s great to be here. The STV is an amazing venue to train in and the girls are really warming to it and training hard. I’m privileged to be England captain. I’m going to play the best I can and lead from the front.”

Anna Mayes, England head coach and a former Team Bath netballer, said: “Training is going really well. We’re number three in the world and Australia are number one, so there’s a huge rivalry between us.

“Tickets sold out for this game within the first few days and that’s a real indicator of the support for netball in the south west,” she added.

The England v Australia fixture is a sell-out, but tickets are still available for Team Bath’s phase one Superleague games.  Team Bath get their campaign in the 2013 Superleague underway at home to Celtic Dragons on Thursday 7 February. They also host Loughborough Lightning on Friday 1 March and Team Northumbria on Friday 8 March.
