Match Report: West Womens League Premier Division
Fixture: Lydney v Team Bath Buccaneers
Date: Saturday 2 Feb 2013
Score: Lydney 0-2 TBB
Venue: Whitecross Leisure Centre, Lydney
Having lost 5-3 to Lydney in the home fixture and tying 3rd position in the league, the Buccs girls were well-psyched as they arrived in Wales/ Gloucester for this eagerly-awaited fixture.
Buccs started with a high tempo, ‘give and go’ style of hockey, that Lydney struggled to match.
It was not surprising therefore when Steph Baker found the backboard in under three minutes, following some exciting build-up play.
Many more opportunities were created through the midfield, Em White on the right and Wendy Britten on the left, which resulted in D entries and some on-target deflections. Lara Williamson deserves particular praise for her gutsy performance up front, whilst Vicky Warner demonstrated some skilful runs that led to short corners and shots on goal.
At half time, the mood was positive, but we were well-aware that the job was only half done!
Lydney had one attacking short corner, which was defended cleanly and any loose balls in the D were quickly pounced on by the ever-agile and eager Buccs GK Kelly Bowden .
Buccs second goal came from the 2nd phase of an attacking short corner routine, when Helen (‘pleased-to-have-found the right goal’ Earle) scored in the bottom left hand corner.
Buccs could not be matched for fitness, intensity or determination on this sunny, cold afternoon, and the match finished with a well-deserved 2-0 victory.
