UOB Men’s 1s leave it late to reach a fifth BUCS Championship semi final in five years!
After winning the FA Midlands Conference earlier in the day things got even better for the University side as the Mens 1st team reached the BUCS semi-final for the fifth time in five years.
The team left it until the final minute to seal the victory in what turned out to be an incredible match.
Lincoln University started the first half much the stronger team and although Bath had lots of possession it was the away side on the break who looked the more dangerous and Jones in the Bath goal was in fine form to keep things level.
However, sloppy play led to Lincoln going 1-0 up about half way into the first half. An own goal shortly followed as Lincoln doubled their lead.
Bath then started to get frustrated as near misses flew past the Lincoln goal. Then Lincoln again on the counter made it 3-0 just before half time and seemed in complete control of the tie.
Bath regrouped at half time knowing the next goal was vital and amazingly it went to Lincoln as they continued the second half where they left the first half scoring a fourth goal.
Bath appeared dead and buried but a change of tactics saw them gain control in terms of possession and court territory and the hosts began increasing the number of chances they were creating.
Jones then joined in the act as Bath dipped in and out of using the Fly Goal Keeper. This worked as Lincoln weren’t sure how to defend. Using the Fly Jones found Guttridge who played Khurana back post to make it 4-1.
The same combination a minute later made it 4-2 and got bath back into the game. Ingram then played Guttridge who on the diagonal deliverer a pass that found Gardiner who squeezed a ball back to Ingram to make it 4-3.
Then a goal on the break following another Jones save saw Khurana equalise to make it 4-4 and confirm his hat trick.
With four minutes to go and Bath back on level terms the match really opened up as both teams went in search for the winner but it was still Bath who looked the more likely to score and with eight seconds left did exactly that.
It was Sklavounos who found Khurana inside the box who rounded the Lincoln goal keeper and slotted the ball home to win the game for Bath.
It was a dramatic ending to an amazing day in the clubs history helping Bath progress to the semi-finals of the BUCS Futsal Championships which take place in two week’s time.
The team showed a huge amount of courage to fight their way back into this game, fight which they will need in the next round. Credit must go to Lincoln who were excellent in the first half and were extremely unlucky not to take the game into extra time.
