Match Report: Mens Hockey League – West Conference (Men)
Fixture: University of Birmingham v Team Bath Buccaneers
Date: Sunday 24 February 2013
Score: Birmingham 3-1 TBB
Venue: University of Birmingham Sports Centre
Team Bath Buccaneers fell to their fourth defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 3-1 at Birmingham University.
The defeat means Buccs are all but out of the West Conference title race and will need to rely on some unlikely results if they are to stand any chance of winning the league.
Buccs started well and dominated possession in the first half but failed to create any clear cut opportunities. They did eventually carve out an opening and took the lead just before half time when Tim Atkins and Tim Davenport combined in the circle for the latter to finish with a reverse stick effort.
Buccs continued to control the game in the early stages of the second half but were pegged back midway through when Birmingham were awarded a penalty stroke.
Harry Loxton sent Buccs keeper Tom Skinner the wrong way and suddenly it was the home side that had the impetus.
Minutes after drawing level, Birmingham took the lead when Will Byas finished cleverly following a ball into the circle.
Buccs were shell shocked and despite their best efforts they struggled to find a way back into the game. Birmingham kept the ball well and continued to put Buccs under pressure in the closing stages.
With four minutes remaining they were rewarded with a third goal as the game drew to a close when Will Selfe fired past Skinner after a fine solo run.
Buccs will hope to return to winning ways next Sunday when they travel to Guildford.
