Buccs put a serious dent in Guildford’s West Conference title hopes on Sunday, holding them to a 1-1 draw.

After last week’s defeat to Birmingham University, Buccs were hoping to return to winning ways but a tough, title-chasing Guildford side awaited them in Surrey ready to give them a difficult afternoon.

Chances were few and far between in what was a real cagey affair. German U21 international Nik Reiger had Buccs’ best chance but his close range effort was well saved by Guildford stopper Simon Mason.

With the deadlock still not broken by half time, both sides began to commit more players forward looking for that all important first goal.

Eventually it was the visitors who took the lead when Tim Davenport scored his 18th goal of the season with a close range finish. Davenport reacted first to a Matt Ruxton cross to slide the ball past Mason.

Guildford then enjoyed large spells of possession as they looked to find an equaliser. Many of the large home crowd thought they had found it with ten minutes remaining when former Buccs striker Johnny Haynes deflected a well struck ball into the circle.

Sadly for the Guildford supporters, Buccs keeper Tom Skinner pulled off a sensational save to deny Haynes.

Guildford’s pressure finally told in the 65th minute when a penalty corner brought about their equaliser. This time Haynes made no mistake, deflecting well past Skinner to level.

Guildford went close late on but failed to find a winner which meant they lost ground on Cardiff and Exeter above them, who both won on Sunday.

Buccs will have been satisfied with a decent display and will hope to produce a similar performance on Saturday when they take on Whitchurch at Millfield School.

Whitchurch defeated Buccs 2-1 in Cardiff in November and have been somewhat of a bogey side for Jody Paul’s team in recent seasons.

Buccs will hope to gain revenge and register a win in their penultimate game of the season.
