First final places up for grabs in today’s tennis

14 March 2013

The first semi-finals of the Aegon GB Pro-Series Bath event get underway at the University of Bath later today (Thursday) as the men’s doubles pairs battle it out for places in Friday’s final.

The action, on the indoor courts at the Sports Training Village, starts today at 10.30am and admission to watch is free.

There is plenty of British interest in the men’s doubles semis, with Dan Smethurst and Alex Ward taking on Jan Minar of the Czech Republic and Marek Semjan in the first semi.

Four seeds Lewis Burton and Dan Evans, the only remaining seeds in the men’s doubles, face Neil Pauffley and Marcus Willis in an all-British semi.

The men’s doubles semis are scheduled to take place on court five and won’t start before 1pm.

Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy player Richard Gabb looks to continue his impressive run in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles.

Gabb despatched top seed Josh Goodall in the opening round and saw off Belgium’s Alexandre Folie yesterday to book a place in the quarters.

Today he takes on the in-form Ed Corrie, number five seed, in the opening match on court one. That one gets underway at 10.30am.

Lisa Whybourn despatched fellow Team Bath MCTA player Samantha Murray 6-3 6-2 in the opening round of the women’s singles yesterday and faces Romania’s Laura-Ioana Andrei today with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

She also partners Germany’s Nicola Geuer against three seeds Tara Moore and Bath’s Melanie South in the women’s doubles quarter-finals.

Top seeds Murray and Emily Webley-Smith must overcome Marina Melnikova (Russia) and Sviatlana Pirazhenka (Belarus) to progress to the women’s doubles semis.

The action continues through to Sunday and is free to watch throughout.
