Hopton wins England under-17 singles title

18 March 2013

Team Bath’s Jess Hopton is the new Under 17 English National Badminton Champion after capturing the title at the weekend.

Hopton, who was seeded 5/8 for the championships, took gold with a 21-17, 14-21, 24-22 final win over Ira Banerjee.

She had to do it the hard way, beating second seed Tsui-Yee Lau and joint third seed Lydia Powell en route to the title.

Hopton just missed out on a repeat performance in the women’s doubles partnering Lydia Powell – the pair had to settle for silver after losing the final.

Pete Bush, Team Bath head badminton coach, said: “I’m really pleased for Jess. She has worked really hard at her game and it’s great to see her become an English champion.”

Hopton is a member of the Team Bath Futures squad and also trains once a week with Bush at the University of Bath high performance centre.
