Greene steps up the pace ahead of World Championships
Reigning world champion Dai Greene ran a season’s best to take 400m hurdles gold at the Sainsbury’s British Championships in Birmingham at the weekend.
Greene, who is coached by Malcolm Arnold – British Athletics Lead Hurdles Coach – clocked a season’s best 48.66 seconds to beat former training partner Rhys Williams into second place at the championships, which doubled as the trials for the World Championships in Moscow.
Greene said: “It was nice to come out here and take the victory. I’m really really pleased. I’ve had a tough few weeks by my high standards so it’s nice to run a season’s best.
“I’d like to think I can push on in the next few races against the top guys and really show my worth ahead of Moscow.”
As reigning world champion, Greene automatically gets a place on the team for Moscow.
University of Bath Sports Performance graduates Simon Merrill and Chris Wakeford, both coached by Colin Bovell, the University’s Head Track and Field Coach, made the 400m hurdles final. Merrill finished sixth in 50.85 with Wakeford seventh in 52.20.
Eilidh Child just missed out on making it a double for Arnold’s 400m hurdlers. The Scot came home second in 54.90 behind Perri Shakes Drayton in the women’s final.
Nineteen-year-old Jazmin Sawyers, coached by Alan Lerwill, jumped a season’s best of 6.50m to take silver in the long jump behind Shara Proctor. There was also a season’s best for Amy Woodman, coached by James Hillier. Her jump of 6.32m put her just outside the medals in fourth.
Lawrence Clarke was just edged out of the medals in the 110m hurdles final in his first outing of the outdoor season. Clarke’s time of 13.82 seconds saw him finish fourth – just two-hundredths of a second out of the medals. Clarke is coached by Malcolm Arnold.
Kirsten McAslan, a University of Bath Biochemistry student and Santander Sports scholar, ran a personal best of 52.85 seconds to finish fifth in the 400m final. McAslan is coached by Trevor Painter and Colin Bovell. And Accounting and Finance student Rosie Clarke came home sixth in the 1500m final in a time of 4:16.05.
University of Bath alumni were also in the medals. French and Politics graduate Marilyn Okoro took gold in the 800m in a time of 2:00.60 and there was a silver for Mathematics graduate James Brewer over 1500m in 3:51.92.
