Rugby players miss out on bronze
University of Bath athletes just missed out on a medal on the final day of the World University Games when the GB women’s rugby sevens team went down to Canada in the bronze medal match.
Deb Fleming, a Coach Education and Sports Development graduate, Katie Mason, a Sport and Exercise Science graduate, and Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student Amy Wilson-Hardy were members of the GB rugby sevens squad.
The team played their bronze medal match against Canada today on the last day of the Games in Kazan, Russia, but went down 36-0.
Earlier in the Games Great Britain won all four of their preliminary group games before beating France 12-7 in the quarter-finals, with Wilson-Hardy among the try scorers.
But they then lost 14-5 to Italy in the semis – despite a first-half Fleming try – to go into the bronze medal match.
In shooting, Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student Kristian Callaghan rounded off his Kazan campaign with 16th in the 50m pistol and 13th in the 25m standard pistol.
Earlier in the Games Coach Education and Sports Development graduate Grace McCatty won gold with the women’s football team – following up her bronze in Belgrade four years ago.
University of Bath athletes have an excellent track record competing at recent World University Games.
Jess Dickons won gold in the 200m butterfly gold at the last Games in Shenzhen, China two years ago. Gary Warren (PGCE in Education) and Hector Mackie (Sports Performance) were members of the silver medal winning GB men’s football team.
In 2009, shortly after graduating in Sports Performance, Gemma Gibbons, won judo bronze at the World University Games in Belgrade. She went on to win Olympic silver for Great Britain at London 2012.
Grace McCatty (Coach Education & Sports Development) and Lauren Wells (Sport and Exercise Science) helped the GB women’s football team to bronze in Belgrade.
University of Bath students and graduates who are representing Great Britain at the Games are eligible to receive funding from the University’s Elite Athlete Support Fund, which is kindly donated by the University Alumni.
