Date > Saturday 14 September 2013
Score > 2-0
Venue > Millfield School
Team Bath Buccaneers began their Now: Pensions West Conference campaign by beating Havant 2-0 at Millfield School on Saturday. After a mixed pre-season, the start will have pleased Buccs coach Jody Paul who has seen his side fail to record a win on the opening day of each of the last three seasons.
Buccs started well and opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when Millfield pupil, Ed Horler smashed a fierce shot past Havant keeper Ben Cowling. It was great moment for the youngster who was making his National League debut in front of many of his classmates and teachers.
Buccs enjoyed the majority of the first half possession and should have gone into the half-time break with a much more convincing lead. Tim Davenport, Shaun Matthews and Horler all went close but failed to extend their side’s lead.
Havant came into the game more in the second half but found it tough against a resolute Bath defence. Jack Cropper, Ben Carless and Tom Griffiths had all the answers to the questions posed to them by Havant’s forwards and this seemed to give Buccs’ attacking unit added confidence going forward.
Buccs made sure of the three points when Horler doubled his tally for the afternoon with a superb low flick past Cowling with ten minutes remaining.
Whilst there is plenty still to work on, it was a steady start for Buccs as they look to build on last season’s fourth place finish.
This Sunday the squad travel to Exeter to face newly promoted ISCA. Isca who lost narrowly to Birmingham University on the opening day and they will be keen to bounce back and register their first points of the season when Buccs arrive in town.
