Team Bath Buccaneers made it two wins from two Now Pensions West Conference games as they defeated Exeter-based ISCA on Sunday.
Missing a number of 1st team regulars Buccs faced a tricky task against the newly promoted side who were hosting their first home game of the season. Buccs took the lead in the 15th minute after a strong opening spell. Experienced Welsh midfielder Matt Ruxton provided the finish from close range following a rebounded Tim Davenport penalty corner.
The away side continued to dominate but a defensive error in the closing stages of the first half enabled Isca to get back on level terms when Jon Fry finished past Tom Skinner.
Buccs restored their lead in the 45th minute when Ieuan Davies produced a fine solo run and crossed for Davenport who finished low to silence the large home crowd. Youngster Ed Horler then made it three with a deflected penalty corner flick in the 57th minute.
Isca threw everything at Buccs in the closing stages and were rewarded when Tom Whitworth beat two defenders before rifling an unstoppable shot past Skinner to make it 3-2.
As ISCA pushed for an equaliser, the inevitable gaps began appearing in their back line and Buccs were able to capitalise on these and make the game safe. Man of the match Ben Mackey tied the Isca defence in knots as he won a late penalty corner which Davenport flicked home for a 4-2 win.
Buccs will be glad to have returned with three points from what was a difficult fixture against a side who will improve as the season progresses.
Buccs now turn their attention to Saturday’s home match with league champions Cardiff. Both sides have six points going into the clash and will be hoping to gain an early advantage in the title race.
