Team Bath Buccaneers got back to winning ways in the Now Pensions West Conference with a battling away win at Birmingham University.
After two defeats in which Buccs failed to score, the result was much needed as they look to keep up the pressure on those above them.
Missing key players Matt Ruxton and Shaun Matthews due to work commitments, a young Buccs side started well and immediately had their hosts under pressure. It took only two minutes for them to take the lead after Ben Stone found a Birmingham foot to win a penalty corner.
Tim Davenport’s effort was saved by the Birmingham keeper but Ben Mackey showed real instinct to get to the rebound and finish to give his side the lead.
This lead was doubled five minutes before half-time when Sam Hatherley scored a superb solo goal. Picking up the ball inside the Birmingham half, he beat two defenders before rifling a shot in on his reverse to give Buccs a two goal cushion.
A penalty corner goal from Sam French on the stroke of half time got the hosts back into the game and it gave them renewed hope as they came out for the second half.
As Birmingham pushed for an equaliser, Buccs were able to exploit the gaps they left at the back and they extended their lead in the 60th minute. Ieuan Davies and Matt Boote combined superbly well, giving Ed Horler the simplest of finishes at the far post.
French provided a fine deflection with five minutes remaining to set up a nervy finish but the visitors held on to record a fine victory on the road.
Buccs will look to build on this win when they entertain South-Coast side Fareham at the STV on Sunday (1.00pm start).
