Team Bath Buccaneers picked up another Now: Pensions West Conference win on Sunday, defeating Cheltenham 1-0 at the STV.
The victory was Buccs’ fourth win in a row but Jody Paul’s men were made to work hard for the three points by a tough Cheltenham outfit who are currently languishing in the bottom half of the division.
The first half was scrappy with neither side creating much in the way of clear cut opportunities. The best early chance fell to the visitors but Tom Skinner produced a fine save to deny Alex Hay from close range.
Buccs began to establish a dominance towards the end of the first half and they took the lead three minutes before the break. Some excellent movement from Shaun Matthews enabled Josh Mardell to race clear with the ball. He drew a defender before crossing for Tim Davenport who finished first time past Giles Rooke.
Buccs would have felt they had the better of the second half but they were unable to find the second goal they needed to put daylight between them and their opponents. Davenport, Loic Cerulus and Ed Horler all had good opportunities but were unable to find the net.
At the other end, Cheltenham went close on a couple of occasions but found the Buccs defence and Skinner at their best as they searched for an equaliser.
Buccs were forced to defend a disputed penalty corner in the last minute of the game to give the home crowd a few late nerves but they again defended superbly and held on for a well fought win.
The result means Buccs stay top of the West Conference, a point ahead of second placed Cardiff & Met who won at Isca.
Next week Buccs travel to bottom side Guildford as they look to make it five wins out of five.
