Team Bath Buccaneers’ Indoor side were promoted to the Maxinutrition Super 5’s Division 1 this weekend with some fantastic performances in Division 2 at the University of the West of England.
Needing a top-two finish in the six-team division, Buccs made their intentions clear in their first game against Cheltenham on Saturday, winning 15-2 with Tim Davenport scoring six times.
In their second game on Saturday Buccs defeated a tough West Herts side 8-3, this time Ben Mackey was the star with four goals.
Leading the division at the close of play on Saturday, Buccs were full of confidence as they began their promotion onslaught against Chelmsford on Sunday morning. Buccs won the game 9-0 with keepers Tom Skinner and Freddie Everett playing their part in keeping a clean sheet, somewhat of a rarity in indoor hockey.
Next up was Cannock, in what proved to be Buccs’ most difficult challenge of the weekend. The Midlands side, who compete in the Premier League outdoors, started superbly and led Buccs 6-1 at the half-time break.
The second half was a much tighter affair, with Buccs substituting their keeper in favour of playing five outfield players. The tactic almost paid off as Buccs piled on the pressure, eventually losing out 8-7.
This meant a win in Buccs’ final game against Preston would guarantee them promotion to Division 1. A ruthless display saw Buccs win 10-3 to seal a brilliant weekend.
Division 1 takes place in January, again at the University of the West of England, where Buccs will have a chance to avenge their defeat to Cannock who also gained promotion as Division 2 winners.
They will also take on Premier League outfits Hampstead + Westminster and Surbiton amongst others.
Squad – Tom Skinner, Freddie Everett , Nik Rieger, Sam Hatherley, Ben Mackey, Andrew Eversden, Josh Mardell, Loic Cerulus, Tim Davenport, Ed Horler, Ben Stone, Jack Betenson
