Athletes’ achievements are celebrated

10 December 2013

Four athletes who have won medals at world level competitions are the winners of the latest Team Bath athlete of the month awards.

University of Bath-based triathlete Nicole Walters guided visually-impaired athlete Melissa Reid to gold at the World Paratriathlon Championships in London.

Walters, who has a Sport and Exercise Science degree from the University of Bath, wins the women’s award for September.

Ghanaian judo player Emmanuel Nartey takes the men’s award for September after winning bronze at the Asian Open in Chinese Taipei and following that up with fifth at the Croatia Grand Prix. It’s been an impressive year for the London 2012 Olympian, who went on to add African Open gold in Mauritius to his medal haul in November.

The October awards are dominated by swimmers from British Swimming’s Bath National Centre for Swimming. Michael Jamieson collects his award for winning five medals – two golds and three silvers – from three World Cup events in Moscow, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

And fellow Bath swimmer Sophie Allen wins her first athlete of the month award after winning five medals from the same three short course World Cup events. Her five silvers came with an English record and three personal bests.

Each athlete of the month winner receives a piece of Oakley eyewear from leading stockist Ellis & Killpartrick Optometrists of New Bond Street, Bath, and a framed photograph to mark their achievement.

Tyron Dawkins, Oakley UK Brand Ambassador, presented the awards. He said: “I’d like to congratulate the winners of the latest Team Bath athlete of the month awards. Oakley and Ellis & KIllpartrick are both pleased to continue to be involved with the awards. The latest award winners once again demonstrate the rich vein of sporting talent at the University of Bath.”
