Team Bath Buccaneers continued their fine indoor form this weekend as they played the first of two rounds of the Maxi5s Division 1.
Promoted in December after coming runners-up in Division 2, Buccs picked up where they left off with two dominating displays on Saturday.
First up they defeated Havant 9-1 with former Havant player Tim Davenport scoring four times. They then took on Southgate and registered an impressive 11-4 victory. This time Ed Horler and Ben Mackey did the damage, each bagging a hat-trick.
On Sunday morning Buccs faced their toughest game of the weekend, taking on Premier League outdoor outfit Surbiton. With former Buccaneers Lewis Prosser and Rufus McNaught-Barrington in their ranks, the London side were too strong for Jon Williams’ team, winning 7-4.
In their final game of the weekend Buccs faced Manchester side Brooklands. It was a very close encounter with each side taking turns to have the lead. The game was marred by a number of yellow cards for both sides but Buccs managed to prevail, winning 7-6 after successfully defending a Brooklands corner at the final whistle.
Horler was once again the hero, netting four times and providing the vital challenge to prevent Brooklands’ Pete Flanagan from getting his shot away as they looked for a late leveller.
The nine points Buccs registered leaves them sitting in 2nd place behind Surbiton who won all of their games. Next weekend Buccs will have an opportunity to gain promotion to indoor hockey’s top flight but they will need to be at their best as they come up against some good indoor sides.
Their opponents, Hampstead + Westminster and Cannock both play in the Premier League outdoors, whilst Old Loughtonians and Bournville are well established teams on the indoor circuit.
