Jamieson and Rivers bid for Team Scotland
Olympic and Commonwealth silver medallist Michael Jamieson hopes to take a step closer to sealing a place at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games when he competes at this week’s Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships.
The championships, which run from Thursday to Sunday (3 to 6 April), is the first selection event for swimmers aiming to represent Scotland at this summer’s Commonwealths.
The first batch of Team Scotland swimmers will be selected after the Scottish Championships and the British Gas Swimming Championships, which follow from 10 April through to 15 April.
Both competitions take place at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, which is the swimming venue at the Commonwealth Games.
Jamieson (right), a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate, and Eamon Rivers, a Chemical Engineering student, will both be vying for places on Team Scotland.
Jamieson, who won silver for Scotland in the 200m breaststroke at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and then won another silver in the same event for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, 
is coached by Dave McNulty, head coach at British Swimming’s National Centre for Swimming at the University of Bath.
He goes in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke this week. “I’ve put a lot of work into the 100m this year,” he said. “There are a couple of young guys who have been swimming fast in the 100m this season so it will be interesting to see if I can still give them a run for their money in the sprint event.”
Eamon Rivers (right), who is coached at the University of Bath by Mark Skimming, Team Bath’s head swimming coach, contests the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle at the Scottish Nationals. He is trying to win a place on the Scotland team at his first Commonwealth Games.
