Trio named in Wales hockey squad for Glasgow 2014

11 June 2014

University of Bath student Ben Carless and graduate Lewis Prosser feature in the Welsh men’s hockey team for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. They join Matt Ruxton, who like Carless plays for Team Bath Buccaneers, in the 16-strong squad for the Games.

All three players will make their Commonwealth Games debuts in Glasgow – the Wales men’s team last featured at the Manchester Games in 2002.

Defender Carless is currently studying for a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Bath and captains the University first team.

Lewis ProsserMidfielder Prosser graduated in Sports Performance in 2010 and now plays for Gantoise Hockey Club in Belgium.

Ruxton is also a midfielder. The former Team Bath Buccaneers captain has captained the Welsh team for the last six years and has more than 100 international caps.

The trio become the fifth hockey players with University of Bath links to be selected to play hockey for Wales at the Games.

Chemistry student Eloise Laity was named last month in the Welsh women’s team for Glasgow along with Sport and Exercise Science graduate Emma Batten, who played at the Delhi Games four years ago.

Forty two athletes with University of Bath links have now been selected to compete at the Games – a dozen of them for Team Wales in athletics, hockey, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

Athletes with University of Bath links will represent eight nations – England, Ghana, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales – and compete in seven sports – athletics, badminton, hockey, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

A full list of selected athletes is available on the Glasgow 2014 pages of the Team Bath website.
