16 June 2014

Bath-based swimmer Siobhan-Marie O’Connor won gold in the 200m individual medley at the Mare Nostrum swimming international in Barcelona over the weekend.

O’Connor, who trains at the National Centre for Swimming at the University of Bath, also set a Championships record of 2:09.63.

She was part of a strong British Gas-backed British Swimming squad who came home with 13 medals, including three golds.

O’Connor led the final throughout and was close to a British record. Japan’s Kanako Watanabe won silver in 2:12.42. Sophie Allen, also from the Bath NTC, was seventh in a time of 2:15.52.

There were also two silvers for the University-based squad.  Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson continued his medal winning form in the 200m Breaststroke with silver in a time of 2:10.47. Lizzie Simmonds also took silver in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:09.30.

Chris Walker-Hebborn added a bronze for the Bath squad in the 100m backstroke in a time of 54.53.

But Jemma Lowe was edged out of the podium slots by her British team-mate Aimee Willmott who took bronze in the 200m butterfly.
