Team Bath Buccaneers maintained their unbeaten run in the Now: Pensions Hockey League West Conference with a 2-1 victory over fourth place University of Birmingham.
Buccs got of to a smooth start, dominating the game in midfield and creating chances in front of goal. It was Shaun Baker who converted a Tim Davenport cross to see the league leaders go in front.
Birmingham worked hard and caused some trouble for the Buccs defence who had goalie Tom Skinner to thank for keeping the score 1-0 at half time.
The second half was sloppy from both sides, resulting in a couple of yellow and green cards seeing Birmingham reduced to nine men at one stage.
Buccs couldn’t capitulate on this, which kept the game wide open. Shaun Baker got his second of the match 10 minutes from time tapping in a hard bouncing cross at far post.
The game however, was not over yet as Birmingham scored to make it 2-1 from the restart, resulting in a tense last part of the game.
Man of the match Tom Skinner made sure the three points went back to Bath with two vital saves in the dying seconds of the game. Buccs sit top of the league with 18 points from six games and face Indian Gymkhana at home in the Sitec Arena this Saturday – push back 1pm.
