Former equestrian rider Sam first took up rowing when she began studying at the University of Bath in 2011 and secured a place on the GB Rowing Team’s Start programme. A Santander Sports Scholarship at the University helped her combine her rowing and academic commitments.
She quickly made big strides in her new sport, winning a silver medal with the women’s eight at the 2014 World U23 Championships and following that up with bronze in the women’s four the following year. That podium place came in the summer that she graduated from both University and the Start programme.
Sam gained more international experience at the 2016 FISU World University Rowing Championships, winning bronze in the women’s pair with Anastasia Chitty, and was invited to train with the senior GB Rowing Team squad at Caversham as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle began.
A shoulder injury meant Sam had to wait until July 2017 to make her senior GB debut at the Lucerne World Cup in Switzerland, finishing seventh overall in the women’s pair with Caragh McMurtry. Both were then selected to race in the women’s four with Beccy Girling and Rowan McKellar at the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
Sam still proudly wears the colours of Crew Bath when competing in club competitions.
