Malta magic as Eden Richardson nets singles title at World Ranking Tournament

10 April 2015

Team Bath MCTA Tennis ace Eden Richardson dropped just one set as she won the ladies’ singles title at the Malta ITF U18 World Ranking Tournament.

The 16-year-old justified her status as number one seed by breezing to a 6-1 6-3 victory over number two seed Veronika Erjavec of Slovenia in the final.

Richardson started her campaign by beating Ireland’s Annie McCullough without losing a game. She then overcame Romania’s Sofia Besukladova 6-3 6-2, Italy’s Rosanna Maffei 7-6(4) 6-2 and Helena Jansen Figueras of Spain 6-2 7-6(4).

Her only minor scare came in the semi-finals where she lost the second set to Romania’s Evelyne Tiron before wrapping up a 6-2 2-6 6-1 victory.

Richardson also reached the final of the women’s doubles with fellow Brit Joely Lomas but lost out in a third-set tie-break to Ireland’s Georgia Drummy and Simona Waltert of Switzerland.

Continuing her tour of the Mediterranean, Richardson is currently competing at the Messika Open at Bat Yam, Israel.

And she is continuing her fine form, having reached the semi-finals of both the singles and doubles competition, partnering Israel’s May Kimhi in the latter.

Those matches will be played on Friday, with the finals on Saturday.
