Mhairi Spence makes World Cup return as Pentathlon GB athletes head for Hungary

29 April 2015

Mhairi Spence will be looking to stake her claim for a place at this summer’s Modern Pentathlon European Championships at the University of Bath when she makes her World Cup return this week.

The 2012 World Champion, a Coach Education and Sports Development graduate who has trained at Pentathlon GB’s National Training Centre in Bath for 12 years, is in an eight-strong British squad for World Cup 4 in Kecskemét, Hungary.

It is her first World Cup appearance since the same stage of last year’s competition and only her second outing of 2015, following on from a fine fifth-placed finish at the Swiss Women International.

Joining her in the women’s competition in Hungary – with the qualifiers on Thursday and final on Saturday – will be reigning World Champion Samantha Murray, Kate French and nineteen-year-old Francesca Summers.

Team Bath athlete of the month for February Jamie Cooke – who, like Murray, won gold at World Cup 1 in the United States in February – is in the British men’s squad along with Nick Woodbridge, Sam Curry and Tom Toolis. They are in qualifying action on Friday, with the final on Sunday.

All will be looking to impress ahead of a busy summer, which culminates with the eagerly-awaited European Championships at the University of Bath from August 18-23.

It doubles as a qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and will feature the continent’s top athletes. All of the action will be staged at the Sports Training Village, with swimming taking place in the new state-of-the-art London 2012 Legacy Pool.

Tickets are now on sale for the event and Team Bath members qualify for a discount. Visit www.pentathlongb.org/euros2015 for more information.
