Live blog – Modern Pentathlon European Championships day 1

The Modern Pentathlon European Championships – a qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – are now under way at the University of Bath Sports Training Village!

Nine countries are contesting the mixed relay competition on Tuesday, including the Pentathlon GB duo of Kate French and Joe Evans – past and present University of Bath Dual Career athletes.

5.30pm: OUR FIRST MEDALLISTS Congratulations to Italy’s Camilla Lontano and Valerio Grasselli who take gold in the mixed relay! Belarus produce a sprint finish to beat Russia to the silver medal, while Great Britain come home in fourth behind Germany. An exciting end to a fantastic first day here at the University of Bath – don’t forget to join us during the week.

5PM: RUN/SHOOT Italy will go into the combined event with a 24-second advantage over Russia, who in turn will have a 14-second start on third-placed Belarus. Pentathlon GB’s Kate French and Joe Evans are fourth and will go 51 seconds after the leaders. Come and cheer them on as the first medals of the 2015 European Championships are decided!

3pm: RIDING Italy strengthen their lead going into the combined run/shoot by producing the only clear ride of the afternoon, earning a maximum of 300 points. Russia stay second overall but strong performances from Belarus and Germany move them up the rankings. GB’s Kate French and Joe Evans knock down one fence each and pick up four faults for the fifth best ride of the day, moving them up to fourth overall.

12.45pm: HAVE A GO Visitors to the European Championships this week can do more than just watch pentathlon – they can have a go at it too! It was great to see these youngsters enjoying some fencing fun this lunchtime.

11.30am: FENCING Italy’s Camilla Lontano and Valerio Rimshayte lead the way in the STV sports hall, winning 21 of their 32 bouts. Both Hungary and Russia win 19 and lose 13, while the British duo of French and Evans are seventh after 15 wins and 17 losses.

That means that Italy also take the overall lead with 583 points, 12 ahead of Russia. GB are fifth going into the fencing bonus point round.

10am: SWIMMING. A great start for the home athletes as Pentathlon GB’s Kate French and Joe Evans set the fastest time of 1:57.04 in the London 2012 Legacy Pool! That earns them 349 points and puts them ahead of Russia and Lithuania in the early rankings.

Germany are sixth. Janine Kohlmann said: “The swim was OK. Hopefully we’ll have a good fence now and a good ride, we will see.” Team-mate Alexander Nobis, who enjoyed the swim, added: “I believe fencing will be my strongest performance of the day and will hopefully prove that.”

9am: FINISHING TOUCHES The last bit of work is taking place around the Sports Training Village in preparation for the big event. Here’s how the venue has been transformed. There are 22 nations taking part this week  – good luck to all the athletes!
