University of Bath rugby players seek Red Bull Uni 7s hat-trick as world’s best head to The Rec

16 September 2016

The University of Bath men’s rugby team will take on the best in the world at The Rec, home of Bath Rugby, on Saturday as they bid to secure a hat-trick of Red Bull Uni 7s titles.

After victories in both the 2014 and 2015 editions, the latter courtesy of a dramatic try in the dying seconds, the University of Bath are once again hosting the finals of the international competition in their home city as defending champions.

This year’s contest has been expanded to include teams from the United States and Brazil, Lindenwood and Universidade Paulista respectively. Also competing are the University of Exeter, Cardiff Met, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’amour from France and CUS Milano Rugby from Italy.

Each university team earned the right to line-up alongside the reigning champions by winning national competitions in their home countries.

Saturday will see the teams battle through group stages, with the top two going on to play in the final in front of a 14,000 capacity crowd during half-time of the Aviva Premiership match between Bath Rugby and Worcester Warriors.

Aaron James, Head of Rugby at the University of Bath, said: “It is great to have the Red Bull 7s back in our home town and at The Rec again.

“The competition continues to get stronger and with the new countries involved this year the challenge is even bigger than before.

“Red Bull run a well-organised and enjoyable tournament, which is always a pleasure to take part in.”
