The University of Bath’s Super Rugby squad were boosted on the day of their final pre-Christmas match with news of a new sponsor.
IKON Construction will sponsor the squad through to the end of August 2019 in a three-year deal that will help the fledgling rugby franchise grow with support targeted at sports science and medicine support in particular.
Super Rugby is a brand new national student rugby league, backed by the RFU, which features only the nation’s top eight Universities and Bath have already recorded four wins in their inaugural season.
The blue and gold take on Leeds Met away Wednesday fresh from a win against Cardiff Met and a close-fought battle with table-toppers Hartpury College already this month.
“We are delighted to be joining the Team Bath family and supporting such a prestigious student squad”, said IKON Managing Director, Steve Chant.
“Bath is a rugby heartland and this league is a significant innovation which we are proud to be associated with. It’s an important part of the new, national pathway as well as being a key part of the University’s ever-growing sports landscape”, said Peter Hargreaves, the construction company’s other founder.
Greg Sharp, Deputy Director of Sport at the University and the franchise-lead, said: “Modern student-athletes are playing their sport at a high level whilst juggling studying, training and competition. Ikon will be helping the squad take their development further and may result in players being reintroduced or discovered for the national and Premiership pathways. At the same time we will be supporting Ikon in our community as they develop their already successful national construction business”.
Aaron James, Head Coach at the University of Bath, knows that every match in the new league, including Wednesday’s fixture against Leeds Met, is a tough one. “We need to keep growing if we are to succeed”, he said, “other Universities won’t be standing still and this kind of financial support can make all the difference in making our programme attractive to good, new recruits from around the country”.
The students took on Leeds Met at the Recreation Ground in late October in the reverse fixture as part of the University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. 5000 turned out to see their side win narrowly and James will be hoping to gain full points again tomorrow.
Will Galloway, SU Sport Officer said: ” “Bath’s students will wear the IKON logo with pride. Students get a lot from playing sport, and it’s a real honour to represent the University at such a high level. It’s fantastic to see a company of the calibre of IKON coming on board and supporting us”
The season picks up again in the New Year when Bath visit Hartpury on January 25 with the next home game scheduled on February 1 at the Sports Training Village, kick-off at 6.30pm with admission free.
