Young sportspeople invited to apply for 2018-19 Team Bath Futures Athlete Development programme

10 August 2018

Applications are now being taken for the 2018-19 Team Bath Futures Athlete Development programme, with a screening day for young sportspeople looking to maximise their potential taking place in September.

The successful talent development scheme is open to sportspeople aged between ten and 18 who already compete at regional level or above in their chosen sport or who show great athletic potential.

They can access bespoke coaching sessions in the world-class University of Bath Sports Training Village facilities, designed to maximise gains and reduce the risk of injury at each stage of their growth and maturation.

Among those currently benefiting from the programme is Ed Nightingale, a rising star of British Canoeing who has built on his bronze-medal success with Team GB at the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival by enjoying more national and international success this year including gold and two silver at the Piestany International Canoe Sprint Regatta in Hungary.

Ed Nightingale Futures canoeing“I definitely wouldn’t be where I am internationally without the support I have had from the Futures programme over the last few years,” he said.

“Futures gives me a well constructed gym programme to develop my overall skills as an athlete and enhance my strength. My programme is periodised so that it lines up with my needs during the season, meaning I can be confident of peaking at exactly the right time for selection and racing.

Other Futures athletes compete in such diverse sports as skiing, BMX biking, hockey, netball, rugby and swimming.

Screening for the 2018-19 Futures Programme will take place at the Sports Training Village on Saturday, September 22, testing the physical fitness, speed and power of current and aspiring members of the talent development scheme.

They will also receive an introduction to sports psychology and physiotherapy, among the many support services provided to Futures athletes along with lifestyle management and well-being support. Parents and coaches are welcome to attend with sportspeople on the day.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to register by contacting Futures Development Officer Julia Bailey on 01225 386670 or emailing talent-development@bath.ac.uk. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday, August 20.
