Team Bath Tennis players bidding to secure place at Australian Open as qualifying for first Grand Slam of 2020 begins

11 January 2020

Team Bath Tennis players Samantha Murray Sharan and Liam Broady are both bidding to earn a place in the Australian Open main draw when they compete in qualifying this week.

Murray Sharan, who is coached by Ian MacDonald, will take on China’s Yan Yuan in the first round – they go into the tournament ranked 218 and 228 in the world respectively.

Broady, coached by David Sammel, has been drawn against Ilya Ivashka of Belarus who reached the second round of the main draw in Melbourne 12 months ago.

The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, is taking place from January 20. Already in the main draw is Indian doubles specialist Divij Sharan, Samantha’s husband, who trained with MacDonald at the University of Bath Sports Training Village before Christmas.

Former Team Bath Tennis academy player Marcus Daniell is also in the main doubles draw.
