Quartet of World-Class Start rowers heading to Lucerne for final World Rowing Cup test before Tokyo Olympic Games

13 May 2021

Four graduates of the successful World-Class Start talent development programme based at the University of Bath will be in action when the GB Rowing Team compete at the World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland from May 21-23.

GB’s last international competition before the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games will see London 2012 and Rio 2016 champion Helen Glover continue her comeback to the sport in the GBR1 women’s pair with Polly Swann, the duo having won gold at last month’s European Championships.

The GBR2 crew sees Sports & Exercise Science graduate Sam Courty (pictured) and Annie Withers enjoy their first international outing since successfully qualifying the women’s pair for Tokyo at the 2019 World Championships.

Sara Parfett, who studied Biology at the University, and Rio 2016 medallist Vicky Thornley will race in the women’s eight and women’s single scull respectively.

British Rowing Director of Performance Brendan Purcell said: “This World Cup is our last chance to race internationally before the Olympic Games and will give each rower the chance to stake their claim on a spot on the Team ahead of our final Olympic selection early next month.”
