Team Bath Tennis ace Alicia Barnett ready to mix with world’s best again as she makes Australian Open debut

17 January 2023

Team Bath Tennis player Alicia Barnett will appear at her third Grand Slam in six months when she makes her Australian Open debut this week.

The British number one women’s doubles player, coached by Ian MacDonald at the University of Bath, and partner Olivia Nicholls will take on Czechia’s Markéta Vondroušová and Miriam Kolodziejová in the first round, with the match scheduled for Thursday (19th).

Vondroušová made headlines in 2019 when she reached the French Open singles final aged 19, the first teenage Grand Slam finalist for a decade, and she won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Barnett and Nicholls made their Grand Slam debuts at Wimbledon last summer and also appeared at the US Open in August.

“It’s amazing to be mixing against the best in the world and I’m really excited,” said Barnett, who reached the quarter-finals of the Hobart Open with Monica Niculescu last week. “This is my first time in Australia and hopefully we can keep improving during 2023.”
