VIDEO: TASS athlete Tom Gale continues to soar to new heights in high jump after setting World standard

29 July 2017

Team Bath Athletics Club’s Tom Gale cleared the 2.30m barrier for the first time as he claimed high jump gold at the England Athletics AAA and UK CAU Senior Championships in Bedford on Saturday.

Gale, who is supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) at the University of Bath, made the clearance a week after narrowly missing out on it at the European Junior Championships in Grosseto, where he won bronze with a then personal best of 2.28m.

It was another standout performance by Gale, coached by Denis Doyle, and makes him only the second British athlete to have cleared the IAAF World Championships qualification standard this year, although it came just after the deadline for London 2017 selection.

Biochemistry graduate Kirsten McAslan also impressed in Bedford as she continued her transition from 400m flat to 400m hurdles. In only her third competitive race over the barriers, she claimed victory in 57.31 – just one-hundredth of a second shy of the Team Scotland Commonwealth Games qualification standard.

McAslan was supported by a Santander Sports Scholarship during her time at the University of Bath. Applications are now open for the 2017-18 academic year – click here for more information.
