Gwangju 2015
The University of Bath was again well represented when the 2015 World University Games took place at Gwangju, South Korea, from July 3-14.
Six athletes with links to the University appeared at the Games in addition to three coaches based on campus who worked with the British team.
Games summary
Overall, Great Britain finished 17th at Gwangju after accumulating 11 medals (three gold, four silver and four bronze) – three of which were earned by Bath-based athletes.
Jay Lelliott was the pick of the Bath performers, winning gold and silver medals in the men’s 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle respectively. Lelliott narrowly missed out on a third medal after finishing fourth in the men’s 1500m freestyle and fifth as part of the 4x100m men’s medley relay team.
Business Masters student Alex Walker (pictured) clinched a silver medal in the doubles mixed tennis event alongside playing partner Darren Walsh after overcoming teams from Venezuela, Indonesia, Poland and Chinese Taipei. The pair eventually missed out on gold after losing to doubles from Belarus.
Gymnast Lynne Hutchison, who trains and coaches at the STV, finished 25th in the women’s individual all-round rhythmic gymnastics event with a score of 57.500.
Angus Pederson helped Great Britain sweep past Uganda 5-0 in the group stages of the team badminton competition, but the team fell to eventual gold medallists South Korea soon after.
Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering student and shooter Kristian Callaghan couldn’t place higher than 16th across four disciplines – reaching his best rank in the men’s 25m rapid pistol event.
