Latest athletes of the month are announced

09 October 2014

Athletes competing in athletics, judo, modern pentathlon, rugby and swimming are the latest winners of the Team Bath athlete of the month awards.

The winners of awards, which are supported by Oakley and Ellis & Killpartrick, once again showed the breadth of sporting talent at the University of Bath.

Our latest winners covered the months of June, July and August. Modern pentathlete Kate French and rugby player Freddie Clarke collected the awards for June.

Kate was not only the only British athlete to quality for this year’s World Cup Final, but she produced a fine all-round performance, just missing out on the medals in fourth.

Sports Performance student Freddie was a member of the University team that won the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) rugby sevens title and then went on to win the European crown, representing England. He then played for the GB team that won the World Universities title in Brazil.

Commonwealth Games gold

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow grabbed our attention in July and it was fitting that our winners were both athletes who fared well at the Games.

Judo player Megan Fletcher collected the women’s award after winning gold for England in the under-70kg class. The men’s award went to Chris Walker-Hebborn, who trains at British Swimming’s Bath National Training Centre after he won two golds and a bronze in Glasgow.

And some of the stars of Glasgow 2014 also collected the awards for August. Hurdler Eilidh Child won the women’s award after following her 400m hurdles Commonwealth Games silver with a magnificent 400m hurdles gold and 4x400m relay bronze for Great Britain at the European Championships.

Danny Talbot was a member of England’s 4x100m silver medal winning team in Glasgow, when he ran the anchor leg for the quartet alongside Jamaica’s Usain Bolt.  That followed an impressive performance in striking 200m gold at the British Championships.

Each of the winners receives a piece of Oakley eyewear from the Ellis & Killpartrick store in New Bond Street, Bath.

Truly impressive

Tyron Dawkins, Oakley UK Brand Ambassador, presented awards to the latest winners. He said: “It’s always a pleasure to meet such a varied and talented range of athletes. Once again the standard of award winners has been truly impressive and I’d like to congratulate them on their achievements.”
