Lyons aims to roar for GB

15 February 2007

University of Bath student Dave Lyons will row for Great Britain at this weekend’s FISA Team Cup in Spain.

The Coach Education and Sports Development student will row in one of two Great Britain fours at the early season ‘friendly’ sprints regatta in Seville.

University of Bath graduate Marcus Bateman, now a member of the Leander Club,  also makes the trip to Seville in the GB eight – a crew that also features former Olympian Robin Bourne-Taylor.  Bateman was a member of the GB men’s coxed four that finished fifth at last year’s World Championships at Eton.

Both Lyons and Bateman have come up through the Amateur Rowing Association’s World Class Start programme.

All of the crews will race over 1000m – half the Olympic distance – on Saturday’s (17th February), and over a 500m course on Sunday. The FISA Team Cup is seen as an early opportunity for a competitive run-out as a welcome change to the rhythm of the winter training regime.

The University of Bath has one of the leading university sports departments in the UK. Under its Team Bath brand, its success is based on the expertise and dedication of staff, and its excellent facilities, used by the community and Olympic medal winners alike.
