Bath pair on sprint awards shortlist

Two University of Bath-based athletes feature on a shortlist of three for a prestigious national young sprinter of the year award.

Andrew Pozzi and Danny Talbot are on the shortlist for the Spar Stars Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award.

Andrew Pozzi, who is coached by UK Athletics National Events Coach – Hurdles Malcolm Arnold, became the fastest ever British junior hurdler this year when he set a British Junior record of 13.29 seconds for the 110m hurdles.

He also won silver at the European Junior Championships in his first international final. All this after coming back an operation following a broken foot that kept him out of action in the 2009/10 season.

Danny Talbot, a Sports Performance student at the University of Bath, won the UK Indoor Championships over 200m and followed that up in the outdoors season by winning the Under-23 national title, finishing fourth at the European Under-23 Championships and then winning selection for the GB team at the World Championships in South Korea. Talbot is coached by Dan Cossins.

Pozzi and Talbot pair are joined on the shortlist by David Bolarinwa.

A panel of judges selected the three shortlisted athletes from the 10 athletes featuring on the 2011 Spar Sprint Programme. Members of the public can now vote take part in an online vote for the athlete of their choice. The winning athlete receives £1000 from Spar.

The poll closes on Friday 25 November and the winner will be announced at the Aviva UK Athletics Awards Dinner in London the following day.

The University of Bath is The Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ 2011/2012.
