Brits to battle for men’s doubles title today

15 March 2013

Britain’s hopes in the first final of the Aegon GB Pro-Series Bath competition rest on the shoulders of four seeds Lewis Burton and Dan Evans.

The GB pairing tackle the unseeded Jan Minar of the Czech Republic and Marek Semjan of Slovakia in the men’s doubles final at the University of Bath Sports Training Village later today (Friday).

Admission to watch the event is free. For an order of play and draw sheets go to http://www.teambath.com/sport/tennis/aegon-gb-pro-series/

Lewis and Evans reached the final with a two-set win over fellow Brits Neil Pauffley and Marcus Wills yesterday, while Minar and Semjan saw off the British pairing of Dan Smethurst and Alex Ward.

Before he can concentrate on the doubles final, Evans has the small matter of trying to negotiate safe passage to the singles final. Fellow Brit David Rice stands in his way. They are first up on court one today in a match starting at 10.30am.

It’s followed by another all British semi, when Ed Corrie takes on Tom Farquharson.  Corrie was made to work hard for a place in the semis by Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy player Richard Gabb yesterday. Despite a brave battle, Gabb went down 6-4 7-6 (4).

The women’s doubles have also reached the semi-final stages, with four unseeded pairings remaining in the draw. Team Bath MCTA player Lisa Whybourn and her German partner Nicola Geuer face Marina Melnikova (RUS) and Sviatlana Pirazhenka (BLR) in the first semi. It’s followed by the contest between Michaela Honcova (SVK) and Tereza Smitkova (CZE) against Viktorija Golubic (SUI) and Julia Kimmelmann (GER).

It’s quarter-finals day in the women’s singles. Whybourn missed out on the quarters going town to Laura-Ioana Andrei or Romania in three sets yesterday. The only other British player in round two, Naomi Broady, also went out yesterday.

The competition progresses to the men’s singles and women’s doubles finals tomorrow (Saturday) with the women’s singles final on Sunday.

Admission for spectators is free throughout.
