Late crew change for Frazier as he steps up bid for World Under-23 Champs

17 April 2013

University of Bath student Frazier Christie faces another big step at the weekend en route to his goal of rowing at this year’s World Under-23 Championships.

The Economics student competes in the Great Britain Senior and Under-23 Trials at Caversham. The top under-23s will be asked to stay at Caversham next week to take part in seat racing trials.

Christie needs to make sure he reaches the seat-racing phase to have a chance of securing a berth on the GB team at the World Under-23 Championships in Austria in July.

Christie and rowing partner Jack Cadman, also a University of Bath Economics student, were the third fastest under-23 pair at the GB Rowing Team Second Winter Assessment trials in Lincolnshire.

The pair were due to row together again this weekend, but Christie had to start afresh with a new partner after Cadman suffered a back injury last month.

Christie has been training with Molesey Boat Club oarsman Ollie Wynne-Griffith for the last two weeks and the pair will row together in the trials at the weekend.

Dan Harris, Talent Development Coach – Bath on the GB Rowing Team’s Start Programme, said:  “This is a key weekend for Frazier.

“Frazier and Ollie will have been training together for about two and a half weeks by the weekend. That’s just about enough time to get them going well enough to race.”

In early May Frazier will be back in University of Bath colours for the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Regatta in Nottingham.

Christie started rowing as a sixth former at Prior Park College and now receives support at the University of Bath from a Santander Scholarship. He is also a TASS student.

He is aiming to follow n the footsteps of some Britain’s top rowers, who learned to row on the GB Rowing Team’s Start programme at the University of Bath.

They include Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, who last year became the first GB women’s rowing crew to win Olympic gold.  Stanning combined training with studying for a Sports Technology degree.
