Katie lands pair of medals

University of Bath member of staff Katie Franks has scored the biggest success yet of her Tae Kwon Do career with a pair of medals at the Welsh Open Championships.

The 25-year-old, who works as merchandise sales consultant in the Department of Sport, won individual sparring silver in the black belt heavyweight division and a team gold at the competition in Cardiff at the weekend.

“It’s my best national result yet,” said the Calne Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB) club member.

Katie has been training in the Korean martial art for the last 11 years, but her best results have come in the last three years.

“All of my medals have come as a black belt adult in the last three years,” she said. “A lot of it’s about confidence, but I’ve been training a lot more as well.”

Katie, who also won a brace of bronzes at last year’s European Championships in Poland, is set to compete at the World Championships in Coventry in July.
