Trio named in Scotland’s biggest Commonwealth Games team
University of Bath student Kirsten McAslan and graduates Gemma Sole and Aileen Davis were today (Thursday) named in Scotland’s biggest team to compete at a Commonwealth Games.
McAslan is a Biochemistry student at the University and has been selected as a member of Scotland’s 4x400m relay squad for the Glasgow 2014 Games.
She is following in the footsteps of her mum, Fiona (Hargreaves), who competed at Scotland’s last home Games at Edinburgh in 1986 and was a member of the 4x400m relay quartet that finished fourth.
McAslan (right) is supported by a Santander Sports Scholarship.
Gemma Sole was today named in Scotland’s netball 12 for the Games. Sole, who plays goal shooter and goal keeper, is a University of Bath Modern Languages and European Studies graduate. She is the daughter of Scotland’s former Grand Slam winning rugby captain and former British Lion, David Sole.
Aileen Davis was named in the Scotland women’s hockey squad for the Games. She has an MSc in Management with Marketing from the University of Bath. A former University first team player, she now plays for Clifton.
The trio were among the final batch of 102 athletes selected for the Scotland team across eight sports, taking the final team size to 310 athletes, Scotland’s biggest team for a Commonwealths.
They bring the total number of athletes with University of Bath links representing Scotland at the home Games to six, joining hurdler Eilidh Child and breaststroker Michael Jamieson, who both train at the University of Bath, and graduate Andrew Burns, a member of the Scotland’s judo team.
Some 45 athletes with University of Bath links have now been selected to compete at Glasgow 2014. They will represent eight countries in eight sports.
Athletes will compete for England, Ghana, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in athletics, badminton, hockey, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.
