GB has a new European wheelchair fencing champion in the shape of Team Bath-based Dmitri Coutya, who took his debut continental crown in Terni – a town in the southern part of the Umbrian region of Italy – on Wednesday.

Having earlier won bronze in the category B foil, losing out to Italy’s Marco Cima in the semis by just a single point, Coutya lined up for the category B men’s epee. He faced Andrei Pranevich of Belarus in the final and recorded a massive 15-5 win.

On Thursday, Paralympic medallist and MJ Church ambassador Piers Gilliver bagged a further medal for GB with silver in the category B men’s epee. Gilliver, seeded top, powered through his quarter and semi-final both against Russian opposition before missing out by two points to Russia’s Maxim Shaburov in a tightly-contested final 13-15.
