Return to training starts Wednesday

26 May 2020

Following the UK Government’s updated guidance on the phased return of sport and recreation, a small group of elite swimmers and coaches will become the first to resume their training at the University of Bath from Wednesday, May 27.

Wednesday at 10am also sees the opening of the University outdoor tennis courts to students and academy players on site, following Lawn Tennis Association guidance on social distancing and using the following booking link : https://www.teambath.com/bookonline/ ‎

Staff at the Sports Training Village (STV) have been working closely with British Swimming and support staff at the English Institute of Sport (EiS) as well as with our tennis experts to ensure that all Government guidelines – as set out in this document – are met.  It is important to note that the government guidelines do not yet allow for club swimming.

Swimmers and coaches in the elite group will follow strict social distancing guidelines while travelling to and from, and training in, the STV pool and gym which will be suitably cleaned prior to and following each training session

A one-way system has also been introduced within the building. The changing rooms will remain closed with access to zoned spaces on the pool deck to change.

Other elite athletes are expected to return to training over the coming weeks once the appropriate guidelines and risk assessments have been agreed between National Governing Bodies, UK Sport and the University.

While a return to training for elite athletes coupled with access to tennis outdoors have both been given the government go-ahead, the Sports Training Village remains closed to other users in line with the current UK Government guidance.

However, the return of a limited number of athletes and coaches to the building will also allow us to fully test our procedures, signage, one-way systems, cleaning regimes and social distancing in advance of any future Government-approved access.  This small step is a sign of hope for the eventual resumption of sport and physical activity at the University.

We will continue to provide updates via this website and our social media channels. Thank you, as always, for your continued understanding.
