Murray faces Sharapova at Wimbledon

23 June 2014

Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy player Samantha Murray faces the biggest challenge of her career to date when she plays French Open champion Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon.

Murray, ranked at 247 in the world, received a wild card into the main draw at Wimbledon for the second year running and has drawn Sharapova in the opening round.

“When I first heard the draw I was a bit shocked, I just see it as great opportunity to play someone of her calibre,” said Murray, who plays the 2004 Wimbledon champion on Tuesday (24 June).

The contest will be the second match on Court 1 following the men’s singles first round game between Roger Federer and Paolo Lorenzi at 1pm.

“I’ve never played anybody in Sharapova’s league before,” added Murray, who has trained at the University of Bath since 2010.

“There’s obviously a big gulf to make up in terms of rankings, but I just have to start strong, put my game on the court and try and impose myself on the match.”

Fellow Team Bath MCTA Tennis Academy player Anna Smith partners Jocelyn Rae in the women’s doubles.  They face Flavia Pennetta from Italy and Australia’s Samantha Stosur.

Stosur has reached the women’s doubles final on three occasions, in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
