Best international result yet for Team Bath Dual Career fencer Becci Curwen at Coupe de Monde U20 World Cup in Italy

University of Bath student Becci Curwen achieved the best result of her international fencing career when she represented Great Britain at the Coupe du Monde U20 Fencing World Cup in Udine, Italy.

It was the 20th time that foil fencer Curwen, who is in the first year of a Sports Performance course, had competed on the international stage and her travel and competition costs were part-funded by the Team Bath Elite Athlete Fund.

“As well as representing my country, I also felt proud to represent the University of Bath,” she said. “I travelled out in my UoB fencing hoody and talked to a variety of people about fencing at the university.

“The competition was well run. In my pool I won three of my six fights, beating athletes from Israel, Russia and Austria, and made it through the cut ranked 54th.

“I then got a bye into the last 64 where I was drawn against the 11th seed from Russia. After a close fight I lost 15-10 but achieved my best international result of 55th out of 91.

“I fought against some of the best fencers from around the world and gained both international and domestic points, which has increased both my World and British ranking.”

Curwen is supported by the Team Bath Dual Career programme – click here to find out more about the scheme, which helps student-athletes strike a balance between study and sport.
