World and Commonwealth places up for grabs as a host of Bath-based swimmers compete in British Swimming Championships

04 April 2022

Nearly 50 University of Bath-based swimmers are heading to the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield this week to compete in the British Swimming Championships 2022.

Among those in action are nine Tokyo Olympians, five of whom won gold for Team GB last summer, and a host of talented students in both the British Swimming National Centre Bath and University of Bath swimming squads.

Six promising youngsters from the Team Bath AS community club are also competing at the championships, which run from Tuesday to Sunday (6-11 April) and will see the country’s top swimmers look to stake their selection claims for major events including this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham plus World and European Championships.

Fifteen members of the hugely-successful National Centre Bath squad – coached by David McNulty in the University’s London 2012 Legacy Pool – are on the entry list including Olympic Champions Freya Anderson, Tom Dean, James Guy, Calum Jarvis and Matt Richards.

The last four of those are all in a world-class 200m freestyle field for the last race of the week, where Tokyo gold-medallist Dean will be looking to add the British crown to his Olympic title.
