Rio 2016 medallist Piers Gilliver back with a bronze as wheelchair fencer returns to action

19 February 2017

University of Bath-based wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver made a medal-winning return to action in his first competition since claiming epee silver at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Gilliver, a sporting ambassador for Team Bath partners MJ Church, took bronze at the IWASF World Cup in Eger, Hungary, as the 2017 international season got under way.

There will be further competitions in Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and the United States during the coming months, as well as the World U23 Championships in Warsaw.

As well as his bronze medal, Gilliver was also presented with an award in Eger to recognise the fact he ended 2016 ranked as world number one in epee – a status he has now held since September 2015.

Gilliver, whose lead coach is Peter Rome, has been based at the Sports Training Village for the past two years, sparring with the Pentathlon GB squad and Bath Sword Club in the fencing salle.
