Golden Greene targets Delhi

04 August 2010

European champion Dai Greene returned to his University of Bath training base to prepare for his next big challenge – the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Greene, who equalled the second best British time for the 400m hurdles to win gold for in Barcelona on Saturday, said it was fantastic to return to the Sports Training Village clutching a gold medal.

“All the hard work through the winter months has paid off,” said Greene, who is coached by UKA national event coach – hurdles Malcolm Arnold. “I had to execute my own race and I knew that the gold medal would be there for the taking.”

Greene paid tribute to coach Arnold, who also coaches Rhys Williams, silver medallist in the 400m hurdles at Barcelona.

“He has done a fantastic job,” he said of Arnold. “When I started with him I was a second slower than I am now.

Greene is now targeting gold for Wales at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which take place in Delhi in October.

“The Commonwealth Games is my next target now, it’s only every four years and I’m looking forward to wearing a Welsh vest.

“My first aim this year was to win the Europeans, so I’ve ticked that box. You need to be the best in Europe if you want to become the best in the world. A couple of years ago I had a few injuries and setbacks, so I can really appreciate the good times, but I’m not going to get carried away.”

There was also a team bronze medal in the marathon for Team Bath AC runner Holly Rush, whose 20th place finish in the marathon made her Britain’s third scorer in the team event.

University of Bath French and Politics graduate Marilyn Okoro was a member of the GB 4x400m quartet that won the bronze medal at the European Championships.
